Patil urges NRIs to invest in India

Sunil Shivdasani in Singapore | July 10, 2004 19:01 IST

Dispelling fears that terrorist activities in some areas in India might hamper the growth of business and industry, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Saturday invited non-resident Indians to invest in the country and assured conducive climate for business opportunities.

Such activities might be occurring in some areas but that should not deter NRIs from investing in India, Patil said replying to a question during a video-conference interaction at the concluding session of a high-powered NRI summit in Singapore.

There was peace in the country and the government was committed to combat the menace of terrorism, he said.

The minister assured the NRIs that the government would make special efforts to increase foreign direct investments and in this endeavour their involvement would be considered.

He reminded the participants that Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the Budget proposals had promised to set up special exclusive zones for NRI investments. "Please cooperate with India and India would cooperate with you."
