Tata Motors launches Sumo Victa

July 07, 2004 18:12 IST

To take on the contemporary models in the utility vehicle segment, the country's third-biggest carmaker Tata Motors on Wednesday launched a facelifted version of the Sumo through which it expects a 10-15 per cent sales growth over the 28,000 Sumos it sold in the last fiscal.

The Sumo Victa marks the first major facelift the company has given to its almost a decade old model and the company has redone most of the exteriors, though retaining almost all of the engine and other specifications.

"Over 265,000 Sumos have been sold since the model was launched in 1994 and we expect that this new model will carry forward the momentum," Tata Motors Commercial vice-president (passenger car business unit) Rajiv Dubey told newspersons in New Delhi.

The price of the new model varies between Rs 487,000-587,000 for its various variants and with this the company plans to take on competition from the likes of Toyota's Qualis,
Mahindra and Mahindra as well as the newly-launched Tavera from General Motors.

On other models, Dubey said the estate variant of the Indica would be launched in the third quarter of this calendar year. "We are looking at a launch around the festival season for the Marina," he said.

The company is also ramping up capacity by 50 per cent to 225,000 units by the end of this year and Dubey said most of this would be on the 'X1' platform on which models like the Indica and mid-size Indigo are made. "The 'Marina' will also come up on this platform," he said.
