Sensex sheds 142 points at close

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 36 points at 6,100. The markets witnessed extreme volatility during the intra-day trades, as hectic buying across the board in early deals lifted the index to an intra-day high of 6,130.
The bearish trend emerged in early noon deals and the markets witnessed a total sell-off towards the close as relentless selling across the board dragged the index below the 6,000 levels to a low of 5,900.
The Sensex finally ended the session with a huge loss of 2.34% (142 pts) at 5,922.
The Nifty, after touching an intra-day low of 1,877, finally ended at 1,893 - down 42 points.
SBI succumbed to heavy losses, and crashed 5.61% (Rs 37) to Rs 623. While BHEL ended with a loss of 4% (Rs 22) at Rs 546, MTNL closed down a rupee at Rs 142. HPCL, however, closed up a rupee at Rs 439.
Reliance ended off-gains with a loss of 2.30% (Rs 13) to Rs 572. ITC ended 2% lower (Rs 21) at Rs 1,119. HLL was down 1.69% (Rs 3) at rs 204.
Infosys slumped 2% (Rs 110) to Rs 5,392. While Satyam lost 4.14% (Rs 14) to Rs 319, Wipro slipped 1.23% (Rs 21) to Rs 1,714.
Cipla dropped 3.51% (Rs 48) to Rs 1,311. While Dr. Reddy's shed 3% (Rs 41) to Rs 1,340, Ranbaxy was down 1.31% (Rs 14) at Rs 1,081.
Grasim (down Rs 29 or 2.51% to Rs 1,120), L&T (down Rs 18 or 3.34% to Rs 519), Gujarat Ambuja (down Rs 10 or 3.23% to Rs 298) and ACC (down Rs 8 or 3% to Rs 249) ended with steep losses.
Tata Motors fell 4.58% (Rs 23) to Rs 486. Hero Honda slipped towards the close, and ended down a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 481. Bajaj, however, gained 1.38% (Rs 15) to Rs 1,072.
Hindalco declined 1.70% (Rs 24) to Rs 1,371. HDFC slumped 3% (Rs 20) to Rs 651. While ONGC dropped 2.54% (Rs 21) to Rs 820, ICICI Bank dipped 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 295.
Tata Power crashed 6% (Rs 25) to Rs 384. While Tisco declined 4.17% (Rs 19) to Rs 438, Zee dropped 3.72% (Rs 6) to Rs 158.
Bharti Tele, on the back of its impressive quarterly results, rose 5.48% (Rs 6) to Rs 118.
