Exim Policy may be declared earlier

January 14, 2004 17:29 IST

The government may advance its annual Exim Policy outlining sops to boost exports to $80 billion by 2006-07.

"There is no legal bar for advancing or postponing the Exim Policy," official sources said indicating that the policy, which usually is announced on March 31 might be advanced in the event of early Lok Sabha elections.

After the government came out with excise and customs duty cuts in its Mini-Budget last week, the sops to exporters are likely to be announced as part of the efforts to "fine tune" the policy regime, the sources said.

Exporters have been hit hard by the appreciation of rupee and this needed to be tackled, as it could brook no delay because of impending elections, they said.

Though the government has a five-year Exim Policy 2002-07, there is an annual Exim Policy to meet the evolving situation.

As global situations do not wait for elections, it is only appropriate that the policy be brought out early, the sources said.
