Industrial production slumps in July

The industrial growth during July is estimated to have dipped to 5.6 per cent as against 7.1 per cent during the same month of 2002, despite a healthy growth of the manufacturing sector.
The cumulative industrial growth during the first four months of the current fiscal year, however, rose to 5.6 per cent as against 5 per cent during the corresponding period of 2002-03.
According to the quick estimates of Index of Industrial Production, the manufacturing sector grew by 6 per cent during April-July as against 4.8 per cent during the same period of previous year.
The sector rose by 6.8 per cent during July 2003 as against 6.7 per cent during the same period of last year.
The mining sector, which grew by 4.6 per cent during April-July this year as against 8.2 per cent during the comparable period of 2002, saw a slide in growth to 2.6 per cent in July 2003.
The mining sector had registered a 12.1 per cent growth in July last year.
The electricity growth during July 2003 registered a negative growth of 1.9 per cent as against 6.1 per cent in the same month of 2002.
During the first four months of this year, the electricity sector grew by a mere 2.6 per cent as against 4.3 per cent during April-July 2002, the IIP quick estimates point out.
