Telecom equipment market up 10% in 2002-03 to Rs 28,238 crore

Buoyed by the growth in the wireless market, the telecom equipment market grew by 10 per cent in 2002-03 to touch Rs 28,238 crore (Rs 282.38 billion), according to a latest survey.

In the GSM handsets (legal market) category, Nokia was the top vendor with revenue of Rs 330 crore (Rs 3.3 billion), coming from the sale of 6.6 lakh handsets and 46 per cent market share.

In the CDMA handsets category, LG Electronics was the top vendor with revenue of Rs 291 crore (Rs 2.91 billion), coming from 5.84 lakh handsets, the 'Voice and Data 100' survey said.

In the case of fixed line section, Bharti Teletech was the top vendor with Rs 153 crore (Rs 1.53 billion) revenues, selling 15 lakh instruments in 2002-03, the survey said.

Equipment contributed 70 per cent to the total industry size of Rs 28,238 crore (Rs 282.38 billion).

While software contributed 19 per cent, 11 per cent came from turnkey services.

Within products, 53 per cent came from the sales to operators, 17 per cent from the sales to small and medium enterprise users; eight per cent from the sales of GSM and CDMA handsets.

Overall, Lucent was the biggest equipment vendor with sales worth Rs 2,015 crore (Rs 20.15 billion), the survey said.

The enterprise network equipment segment notched Rs 4,037 crore (Rs 40.37 billion), with Cisco as the biggest supplier of router and LAN switches.

Cisco sold routers worth Rs 459 crore (Rs 4.59 billion) and LAN switches to the tune of Rs 841 crore (Rs 8.41 billion).

The market for modems shrunk to Rs 179 crore (Rs 1.79 billion) in 2002-03 from Rs 252 crore (Rs 2.52 billion) in the previous year.

Network integration services market contributed Rs 2,871 crore (Rs 28.71 billion).
