Pak may import 10 mn kg tea from India

July 02, 2003 18:32 IST

Pakistan Tea Association on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Tea Association to import at least 10 million kg (one crore) of tea from India in 2003-04, provided quality and prices are competitive.

"A formal MoU between PTA and ITA on facilitating tea trade between the two countries has been executed today in Karachi," ITA officials said in Kolkata.

A 14-member ITA group was on a three-day visit to Pakistan from June 29 to sell Indian tea.

Pakistan is the world's third largest consumer of tea and has the highest per capita consumption whilst India is the largest producer.

India exported about 3.5 million kg of tea to Pakistan in 2002-03. This fiscal year might see a three fold increase in that figure, industry sources hope.
