Nasscom sees call centres pumping in Rs 1500 cr

The Indian call centre companies are expected to invest over $325 million in setting up operations in the financial year ending March 31, 2003, predicts the National Association of Software and Service Companies.

The cumulative investments by the call centre companies as of March 31, 2002, was at $ 600 million for the last few years.

"The call centre companies have seen substantial upswing in investments in the last 12 months. This corresponds the interest that the companies have in the Indian market," said Sunil Mehta, vice president, Nasscom.

The call centre companies are expected to add an additional 35,000 to 40,000 seats in the current financial year.

According to Nasscom, this is one of the largest seats addition that the call centre companies have ever made in the country.

According to Nasscom, out of the $325 million investment that the companies plan to invest, close to 50 per cent is in technology and equipment.

"Technology and equipment remain one of the largest investments. This is mainly due to the initial ramp up phase that the most of the companies are in," he said.

Investments in setting up infrastructure and facilities attract about 30 per cent of this investments, while telecom infrastructure and power attracts 6 and 5 per cent, respectively.

According to Nasscom, there is considerable interest in the Indian ITES sector with employment increasing fourfold from 25,000 in 1999 to 106,000 in 2002.

According to Nasscom India's ITES sector would grow to exceed $ 20 billion by 2008.

The Nasscom-McKinsey survey of 1999 had projected that the ITES sector of the country would be a $17 billion industry by 2008.

According to Nasscom, the ITES industry had witnessed a growth of 70 per cent in 2001-02 and is projected to grow at 65 per cent during 2002-03.

Nasscom has also pointed out that the funding of the Indian call centers have come from a diverse sources.
