Zee to co-produce Indo-French film

August 13, 2003 13:03 IST

Zee Telefilms, one of India's leading television companies, is now making a foray into film production with One Dollar Curry, an Indo-French venture that chronicles the life of a young Indian immigrant who makes it big in France.

Nishan, a young Sikh immigrant who strikes gold by opening the first Indian mobile kitchen called One Dollar Curry, is the protagonist of the film.

The movie is being co-produced by Paris-based Non-Resident Indian Vijay Singh, who is also the director of the film.

"With the success of cross-over films gaining tremendous momentum in the international markets, the Indian film industry has finally got the attention that it long deserved," Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Zee Telefilms, said.

"This co-production with France is the first step towards producing cross-over films by Zee Network and will also offer other companies in India an example," he said.

Singh's earlier venture, Jaya Ganga, had won wide critical acclaim globally.

One Dollar Curry also stars Smriti Mishra of Sardari Begum fame. She plays Yamini, the young entrepreneur's fiancée, who -- along with Nishan's friends -- tries to steer clear of many hurdles and helps him win his life's battles.

Mark Tessleer, president of France TV, one of the most influential TV channels in the country and producers of the Oscar-nominated film Amelie Poulain, said: "We have been trying to develop cinematographic co-operation between India and France and are pleased to part of this co-production alliance between India and France.
