Cellular, WLL additions exceed 67 lakh in April-July
August 12, 2003 16:41 IST
India's cellular and WLL additions exceeded 67 lakh (6.7 million) during April-July, against 14 lakh (1.4 million) additions a year-ago, owing to the adoption of growth oriented and forbearing tariff policies, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said on Tuesday.
In fact, the net addition of these two services in April-July has already exceeded the total additions of 65 lakh (6.5 million) clocked during the whole of last year.
"This unprecedented growth is a result of growth oriented, aggressively consumer friendly and forbearing tariff policies recently adopted by the regulator. The calling party pays regime introduced with effect from May 1, and the forbearance approach of Trai for cellular tariffs has allowed the market forces to drive growth freely," a Trai release said in New Delhi.
The approval of innovative alternate tariff plans of basic operators specially those of wireless in local loop mobility services by the regulator, enabled them to reduce the entry barrier for marginal customers -- leading to a massive growth in the sector.
As per the data, over 36 lakh (3.6 million) subscribers were added by the cellular operators during the first four months of the financial year as against about 13 lakh (1.3 million) subscribers during the same period last year.
"The WLL mobility also has shown an unprecedented growth. The net addition exceeded 31 lakh (3.1 million) subscribers as compared to less than 100,000 subscribers for the corresponding period last year," it pointed out.
Trai said that the explosive growth in talktime per subscriber has been possible due to the Indian cellular and WLL realisation falling even below the Chinese realisation for the first time this year.
