DD in talks with Star to air KBC

Bipin Chandran in New Delhi

The state broadcaster Doordarshan is in talks with the Rupert Murdoch-promoted Star India to air Kaun Banega Crorepati on its terrestrial network when the game show makes a reappearance on Star.

If the deal is through, viewers of Doordarshan across the country would be able to view the Amitabh Bachchan hosted show at the same time it is aired on Star.

"Talks are on to get the rights to air Kaun Banega Crorepati on the DD network. We are working out the details," a senior Prasar Bharati official said.

According to sources, the two channels are working out details of the deal at present. It is expected that the channels are in all probability agree for a revenue share instead of a royalty model.

"It would most probably be a sharing of advertisement revenue model with Doordarshan sharing a part of the advertisement revenue it generates with Star," sources said.

As per the negotiations between the two channels, the show would either be telecast simultaneously across Doordarshan network or would be telecast at various time slots in different Doordarshan networks.

"If simultaneous broadcasting is not possible we would look at deferred telecast as an option. Besides, we may even follow a different time slot for different Doordarshan kendras," he said.

Doordarshan expects that Kaun Banega Crorepati would be able to do what it has done to Star TV.

If the deal comes through, it would be a win-win situation for both the channels as Star would get more audience for its programme.

Besides, Doordarshan hopes that a show like Kaun Banega Crorepati would help the channel boost its sagging viewership.

"We think that the Kaun Banega Crorepati would be able to help us reach new viewers. Besides, the programme would also reach more viewers as Doordarshan's terrestrial network has a very wide reach," he said.

Kaun Banega Crorepati, which made its debut on Star on July 2000, broke all television records and created history. Kaun Banega Crorepati, not only set a trend for game shows in India, but also became a part of everyday life.

Besides, no television shows in India has ever reached the popularity of Kaun Banega Crorepati.
