Tourist inflow to India on rise: Jagmohan

After a slump for over two years, tourist inflow to India showed signs of recovery registering an increase of 16.8 per cent last month compared to the same period last year, Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

Though tourist traffic had increased in 2000 by 6.7 per cent, it declined by 4.2 per cent in 2001 due to global economic downturn, September 11 incidents in the US, war in Afghanistan, terrorist attack on Indian Parliament and Indo-Pak border tension, tourism Minister Jagmohan said in a written answer.

Between January and October this year the tourist traffic had declined by 11.8 per cent, but in October it showed positive signs of recovery, he said.

The tourist arrivals are estimated to have increased from 1,43,100 in June this year to 212191 in October, he said.
