Adaptec to invest $10 million in India

BS Bureau in Hyderabad

US-based Adaptec Inc, the global leader in internet protocol storage networking, today announced plans to invest up to $10 million in its Indian operations over the next two years.

David A Sommers, vice-president (engineering), Adaptec Inc, told mediapersons here today that the bulk of fresh investments would flow to the company's operations in Hyderabad.

Adaptec also has a development centre in Bangalore, which is a small entity involved only in software development and servicing for hardware major IBM.

The revamp of the company's Indian operations with fresh induction of capital would enable Adaptec to set up a state-of-the-art testing laboratory at Hyderabad for the company's products developed in the US, David said.

A proposal to build up R&D capability in Hyderabad is also being considered.

David disclosed that a compatibility test laboratory for small computer system interface (iSCSI) that helps solve several current day problems when interfaced with other operating systems would also be set up in Hyderabad for products to be launched early next year.

Last month, Adaptec demonstrated iSCSI inter-operability with the Microsoft Windows 2000.

When told of Bill Gates' announcement last week that a small group on IP storage would be set up at the Microsoft Indian Development Centre at Hyderabad, David said his company was also involved with Microsoft in the area of storage solutions.

Raghu Allamsetty, managing director of Adaptec India, said while the manpower to be employed for the iSCSI compatibility lab may not be large, the investments on equipment would be substantial, and could run to around $1.5 million.
