Maran flown to US for treatment

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Union Industry and Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran was flown to the US Thursday morning for specialised treatment to complications arising out of his heart, lungs, kidney and liver condition.

The "flying ambulance", carrying doctors, paramedics and Maran's daughter Anbukarasi, took off from Meenambakkam Airport at 0700 IST, sources said.

Earlier, Maran was brought to the airport in a special ambulance from the corporate Apollo Hospitals around 0400 IST with the speed jet scheduled to leave at 0450 IST.

The departure was, however, delayed due to fog.

Maran will be treated at the Methodist Hospital in Houston.

DMK president M Karunanidhi, who is also the maternal uncle of Maran, saw him off at the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, while other party leaders and family members were at the airport.

Maran was admitted to the hospital with high fever on September 23. It was later diagnosed as fungal infection in the artificial mitral valve fitted in his heart at Delhi earlier this year. The infection led to complications of the lungs, liver and kidney, for which dialysis and other specialised treatment were given.

While his condition has remained stable for over the past 10 days, there is no visible improvement, leading to the decision by his doctors for going in for specialised cure at Houston.

Treatment for Maran in the US became possible after Karunanidhi talked on Prime Minister A B Vajpayee last week and got the required clearances.
