Infosys bags CII Exim Bank award for 2002
Fakir Chand in Bangalore Infosys Technologies Ltd, the Bangalore-based global IT company, has bagged the CII-Exim Bank award for Business Excellence 2002. The award was announced in the presence of Infosys' chairman and chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy at the 10th Quality Summit, organised by the CII Institute of Quality in Bangalore on Thursday. The jury picked up Infosys for being a role model in leadership, exemplary corporate governance, best in class processes, caring and development of people, commendable wealth creation, and delivery of world class products and services. "Infosys has set new benchmarks for the Indian industry, and achieved a position of eminence in the world market," the jury, headed by Tata Teleservices chairman J J Irani said. The award recognises companies that have achieved exemplary levels of business excellence and can be considered to be role models for other corporate. Acknowledging the CII-Exim Bank award, Murthy told rediff.com that the eminent jury assessed the company for over five days on rigorous parameters based on the European Foundation for Quality Management, a highly respected quality initiative in the world. "We are excited and feel honored by this award. But for Infosys this is only the beginning of a long journey. Such awards and recognition will only encourage us to do better," Murthy stated. Incidentally, Infosys is the first software services company in the world to get this award under the EFQM processes. Ever since the award was instituted 8 years ago, only four companies, viz., Hewlett Packard (1996), Maruti Udyog (1998), Tata Steel (2000), and Infosys (2002) qualified for such recognition. The commendation certificate for significant achievement was awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Tiruchi, for demonstrating perseverance in its effort at continues improvement. It is the first public sector undertaking to win such certificate. The certificate of commitment to TQM (total quality management) has been awarded to four companies, viz., Alexandria Carbon Black (Egypt), Birla Cellulosic, Hindalco Industries (India), and Thai Carbon Black (Thailand).
