Amul to spread wings, enter Lanka next year

Devendra Vyas in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Co-Operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd is planning to take its brand Amul to Sri Lanka by early 2003.

B M Vyas, managing director, said, "We are planning to launch our Amul milk powder in Sri Lanka during the beginning of the next year. At present, Lanka is buying this commodity from New Zealand and Australia".

Vyas added, "Our close connectivity to Sri Lanka will play an important role in our new venture. Initially, we will appoint a sole distributor in Lanka for Amul milk powder and then expand our Amul range".

"We are positively looking forward to a proposed bridge to be built up between India and Sri Lanka across the sea, and when it comes true, we can plan a full-fledged dairy there", he said.

Sri Lanka buys 50,000 tonne of milk powder annually from the two countries, which can be doubled in the 10 years, he mentioned.

Vyas said, "We have already set up our market in 22 countries of the world including Nepal, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. For the second consecutive year our export turnover has shown growth of nearly 100 per cent. During the year we have been able to consolidate our position in the consumer pack segment as well as demonstrate growth in the exports of bulk-packed milk powders in the Persian Gulf, Africa and Bangladesh markets."
