Plane to fly Maran to Houston arrives in Chennai

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Union Industry and Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran will be flown to the Methodist Hospital in Houston in an air-ambulance, either Wednesday night or Thursday morning, for further treatment of his heart, kidney and other organs.

A special aircraft, , flew into Chennai Wednesday afternoon from Chicago to take Maran, to Houston.

The high-speed 'flying ambulance', equipped with all basic medical facilities and carrying three crew members, three doctors and a nurse, belonging to Aero Care of West Chicago, Illinois, touched down at the Meenambakkam airport around 1400 IST, to fly the minister and his family members.

The Union minister was admitted to the corporate Apollo Hospitals on September 23, following high fever. Two days later, he underwent a 'high risk' surgery for replacement of his 'infected' mitral valve. Subsequently, he developed various complications and renal failure. Despite administration of a new drug, there was neither any improvement nor deterioration in his condition.

Late last week, DMK President M Karunanidhi, who is also Maran's uncle, spoke to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Apollo doctors, when it was decided to shift him to Houston for 'specialised treatment'.
