Canada's Niko Resources strikes gas in Gujarat

Canada's Niko Resources has discovered natural gas in an on-shore block near Surat in Gujarat, an Oil Ministry official told Reuters on Wednesday.

"They have found gas in one well. The flow of gas was good. They will now drill more wells in the block," the official, who did not wish to be identified, said.

"We don't know the size of the reserve yet but indications are it will be commercially exploitable."

The official said the block was awarded to Niko in the second round of India's New Exploration Licensing Policy.

Niko also has a 10 per cent interest in a deep sea block where Reliance Industries announced recently it had discovered an estimated seven trillion cubic feet of gas.
