Maran to be shifted to Houston Methodist Hospital

Union Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran, who was under treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, is being shifted to the Methodist Hospital and Research Institute at Houston, United States, in the next few days.

Hospital sources said arrangements were being finalised for shifting Maran, who underwent mitral valve re-replacement on September 25 after he suffered from candidiasis infection from an earlier valve replacement done at a public hospital in Delhi.

Methodist Hospital is a pioneer in post-operative infection care and the Apollo Hospitals has a tie-up with it.

Doctors from the Methodist Hospital were expected to arrive in Chennai to escort Maran to Houston.

Negotiations were also on for chartering an air ambulance service in the US.

Maran had been on life support systems after the valve re-replacement and underwent liver dialysis. He was on ventilator and was undergoing renal dialysis now.

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi had discussed with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee last week the question of shifting Maran to Houston.

Vajpayee had offered all assistance for Mr Maran's medical care in the US.
