India's telecom market to reach $14 bn by 2006

Telecom market intelligence leader Gartner Dataquest has forecast that India will show a double-digit growth in the sector with its telecom services market reaching $14 billion in 2006.

India's fixed telecom services market too is facing strong competitive pressure, especially on the pricing front, with privatisation of long distance services, according to Gartner Dataquest's latest report for Asia/Pacific.

It said growth in the Indian market will be increased by deployment of phone lines supported to an extent by the rollout of wireless local loop.

Going forward, contribution from local calls and rentals will shore up the revenue base. Data and Internet services will grow faster and their contribution to total revenues will increase, in line with other market in Asia, the report says.
