Confusion over Suresh Prabhu's 'resignation'

Our Correspondents in New Delhi / Mumbai

Power Minister Suresh PrabhuPolitical circles were abuzz on Wednesday over reports of the 'resignation' of Union Power Minister and Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Suresh Prabhu.

Sources said that the Suresh Prabhu resignation drama was still being discussed at the Shiv Sena's two-day conclave at Shirdi in central Maharashtra.

When contacted firebrand Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam admitted that he had heard about the 'rumours' of Suresh Prabhu's resignation, but declined to possess any knowledge on the basis of which he could confirm or deny the reports.

Shiv Sena sources said that some senior party members had complained to Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray against the power minister, who - according to some aggrieved Sena leaders - was getting too close to the Bharatiya Janata Party by aggressively trying to push through the power sector reforms.

This, sources said, was taken as a deviation from the Shiv Sena stance over the reforms agenda and construed as not toeing the party line.

Stung by this attack, Suresh Prabhu is said to have tendered his resignation letter to party chief Balasaheb Thackeray, who has yet to take any decision on the matter.

The Shiv Sena is a key constituent of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.

When contacted Prabhu's personal assistant denied any knowledge about the development. Government sources in New Delhi too refused to comment on the matter saying they knew nothing about the resignation.
