Onward Novell planning acquisitions in India

Bipin Chandran

As part of its strategy to widen product portfolio, leading networking software major Onward Novell is planning acquisitions in India.

"As part of our immediate investment opportunities we have planned acquisitions for product development. India is a market where we are looking at acquisitions seriously," company vice-president (market development), Robert Spearman told Business Standard. He however, did not specify the investments the company is planning in Indian acquisitions.

According to Spearman, the company is looking for acquisitions in areas like customer relationship management, human resource applications, healthcare technologies. "We are looking at companies which will help us augment our existing product line," he said.

Novell is also planning to expand its India operations. The company is looking at increasing the number of software professionals in the country.

"We have about 450 engineers in India," Spearman said. "We will continue to employ more people in India," he added, but did not specify the number of fresh recruitment.

"The India software development operations is the largest outside North America. We will move more critical technology development work to India,"he said.

Identifying the market in India, Spearman said the company would target high growth areas like banking and telecommunications in the country.

"We are already a leader in the banking sector, but with the opening of the insurance sector and computerisation of banking, we are expecting higher growth in these sectors," Spearman said.
