India co-opted in the global tourism crisis management panel

India has been co-opted in the 35-member Crisis Management Committee constituted by the World Tourism Organisation to help the tourism industry in the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Tourism secretary M P Bezbarua will represent India in the committee, which will also include experts and representatives of travel and tourism industry from all over the world, an official release said on Thursday.

Crisis Management Committee will act in three main areas -- collection of information, strengthening the activities of the World Tourism Organisation for safety and security of the tourists, and co-ordination among the tourism industry of different countries.

The committee has been constituted as a follow up to the recommendations of the WTO General Assembly held recently in Osaka in Japan.

Bezbarua has also been nominated to the strategic group of the World Tourism Organisation, the highest advisory body of the 25 tourism experts from all over the world.
