Paswan asks Trai to reconsider rental

Union Communications Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has said his ministry would ask Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to reconsider its recommendations on fixation of monthly rentals to those subscribing to the limited mobility phone through wireless in local loop between Rs 450 and Rs 500.

"I too share the view that the rentals recommended by Trai is high...We want that Trai should reconsider," Paswan told reporters.

He said his ministry would explore the possibility to move an appropriate tribunal against the recommendations of the Trai. "But I don't know whether such tribunal has powers to hear the matter."

"Trai has mandatory powers on tariff structures...We can do anything if the authority doesn't take a favourable decision," he added.

Paswan said it had been decided to provide services through WLL to 600,000 subscribers by the end of the current financial year and different companies had been engaged for arranging equipment for the purpose.

He said efforts were on to provide the limited mobility service to nearly 200,000 subscribers between June and July.
