India to export high-speed locomotives to South Africa

India will soon export high-speed electric locomotives to South Africa where there was a steady demand for such engines, Minister of State for Railways Digvijay Singh said on Thursday.

Commissioning the high speed electric loco, having 200 km/hour speed at the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, in West Bengal's Burdwan district, the minister said: "India has gained reputation in the world market by producing such engines."

India now stood fifth following France, Switzerland, Japan and Germany in the manufacture of high-speed electric locos and every effort was being made to upgrade the facilities at places like CLW to maintain world standards, he said.

"We want to build electric locos having speed of 300 km/hour at par with countries like Spain and France," Singh said, stressing the need for constant upgradation of technologies.

He said Spain had given Rs 500 million grant to India for running high-speed train on the Bombay-Ahmedabad route for which a feasibility study would be done.

The commissioned electric loco would be used in running super-fast trains like Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express.

The minister exhorted CLW employees to give their best for achieving excellence in production standards.

"This is important to survive in competition," he said.

CLW's General Manager A Sharma, local TC MLA Manik Upadhayay were present on the occasion.
