India-Malaysia consortium wins Hyderabad airport bid

An Indian-Malaysian consortium has won the bidding to build an international airport in Hyderabad, the state government said.

"The state cabinet has approved the bid of GMR-MAHB (GMR Vasavi India and Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad consortium)," the state government said in a statement.

The GMR-MAHB consortium beat out a competing joint bid by Zurich Airport Real Estate and Siemens AG to develop the airport at Shamshabad, about 21 km from Hyderabad, the government said.

The GMR-MAHB consortium will hold a 74 per cent stake in the project while the Andhra Pradesh government and the central government will have 13 per cent each, the statement said.

The first stage of the four-phase project will involve construction of a 3,760-metre runway and is due to be completed by 2008. It will handle 10 million passengers annually, it said.
