Jobs in SSI sector up by 4 per cent to 18 million

Sandip Das

Contrary to claims made by the taskforce on small-scale industries, official data claim that jobs in the SSI sector have increased by nearly four per cent to 18 million.

Data compiled by the ministry of small-scale industries and agro and rural industries further said that the government has actually crossed the targeted 17 million jobs that had to be created by 1999-2000.

The SSI sector was maintaining a growth in job creation of around 4.5 per cent during 1994-1998. However, the growth slowed down to around 3 per cent in the subsequent years.

"In 1994-95, more than 15 million people were engaged with the SSI sector, which rose to 17 million in 1997-98. However, subsequent years witnessed marginal increase in creation of jobs," official sources said.

According to provisional official figures, more than 18.5 million were employed by the SSI sector in the last fiscal. This was marginally higher than the figure of 17.7 million during 1999-2000.

In the last two decades, while the organised sector could create only 5.4 million jobs, the SSI units in the country generated more than 8 million jobs.

The Small Industries Development Organisation estimates said that the number of persons employed in the sector increased from 4 million in 1974 to 17 million in 1999.

In the last couple of years, the number of units in the sector has increased significantly. Sources said that in 1994 there were 2.6 million SSI units in the country and the number grew to 3.4 million in the last fiscal.

However, a senior official said that the significant achievement of the SSI sector had been its performance in exports.

"The share of SSI exports in overall exports of the country increased rapidly from 15.6 per cent in 1973-74 to 34.9 per cent in 1998-99," he said.

Provisional official statistics said that SSI sector exports at the current prices rose from Rs 290.68 billion in 1994-95 to Rs 539.75 billion in the last fiscal.

The value of production in the sector also grew from Rs 2939.90 billion in 1994-95 to Rs 6503.32 billion in 2000-2001.
