Zee alliance with Star, Sony unlikely

BS Corporate Bureau

A revival of Zee's alliance with Star or a possible partnership with Sony does not seem to be on the cards, at least for now.

Three days after Zee Telefilms chairman Subhash Chandra indicated that Zee may not be averse to an alliance with either of its main rivals in India, senior officials of both Sony and Star ruled out any such partnership.

But, at least officially, heads of both Star India and Sony Entertainment Television are treating the issue with their usual corporate reticence.

Peter Mukherjea, Star India CEO, said, "It is not a categorical yes or no." However, other senior Star officials said an alliance with Zee again was highly unlikely. "We are not interested. And we do not think they are either," Star sources said.

Sony's official stand also seems to be on the same lines. While CEO Kunal Dasgupta declined to comment, chief financial officer NP Singh said, "We would have to consider the pros and cons of the proposal. We have not been approached as yet."
