Hummingbird flies into India for knowledge drive

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Hummingbird Ltd, the Canadian-based world leader in enterprise software solutions, has commenced operations in India to market directly its suite of products, including its latest version of enterprise information portal, knowledge management, and document management solutions.

Targetting leading business enterprises and corporates that rank among the top 500 Indian companies, besides large organisations, $237-million Hummingbird is scouting for partners in the areas of consulting, application developers, and system integrators to customize and deploy its solutions.

Hummingbird ASEAN general manager Bala told rediff.com here on Thursday that the company had just tied up Datamatics Technologies Ltd in Bombay for connectivity; Logic Microsystems in Bangalore, and Soft Edge Solutions in Delhi for system integration.

Being one of its kinds to offer global enterprise solutions through the desktop and the Web using a single interface, Hummingbird empowers end-users with ability to access and act upon all business critical information and resources.

"We provide a complete line of host access and network connectivity solutions to enterprises or corporates which use traditional, thin, Web-based, and e-based technology, required to seamlessly access information and resources on mainframe, AS/400, Linux, and Unix systems," Bala averred.

Suited also for organisations such as legal firms, government agencies, and pharma companies, Hummingbird's content and document management solutions enable business-critical applications in client/server, Web-based, and enterprise information portal environments.

With over 40,000 customers, including 75 per cent of the Fortune 500 and around 5 million users the world over, the Nasdaq-listed Hummingbird made foray into India last year through the Bangalore-based Deldot Systems Ltd for joint distribution of its software products.

"In an increasingly knowledge dominated economy driven by the Internet and competition, the company's document and knowledge management education team have relevant expertise, and know-how to serve any organisation's learning method," Bala stated.

With the barrage of information crowding today's businesses, the company's EIP enables end-users to connect content in context and quickly process, filter, and act upon information from any enterprise source.

Being an open-ended platform and device independent solution, the EIP solution can be run across multiple platforms, operating systems, and various databases.

According to a Merrill Lynch survey, the enterprise software solutions' market is estimated to be around $15 billion by 2002-03, thanks to mergers and acquisitions becoming an order of the day the world over.

"For the emerging companies of the new economy, structuring and channeling of information across their networks will force them to deploy EIPs with business intelligence and data integration solutions of Hummingbird," Bala claimed.

The company is targeting revenue of $1 million in the current year.
