IT-enabled sector grows by 70% in 2000-01

IT-enabled services sector in the country grew by over 70 per cent during the year 2000-01 to touch Rs 41 billion from Rs 24 billion in the previous year, according to the latest Nasscom survey.

"Not only this sector has achieved its highest growth ever in terms of revenues but also exceeded industry projections by almost Rs 1 billion," Phiroz Vandrevala, Nasscom chairman, said in a release on Friday.

He said customer interaction services including call centres and customer support centres were prime areas of growth during 2000-01 adding that customer interaction services continued to be the highest growth segment with a growth of 112 per cent over 1999-2000 with revenues touching Rs 8 billion in 2000-01.

The Nasscom survey also revealed that the number of people employed in this sector touched almost 70,000 exceeding the employment projections for 2000-01.

Vandrevala said IT-enabled services had steadily increased their share in total revenue of the country's IT software and services industry from a low of 6.5 per cent in 1989-99 to almost 10.5 per cent in 2000-01.

He said that as per the Nasscom-McKinsey report, IT-enabled services would account for over 20 per cent of the total revenue of the IT software and services industry by 2008.
