Bharti, Power Grid in distribution alliance

BS Economy Bureau

Bharti Telesonics, Bharti Group's long distance operations arm, has entered into a strategic alliance with power transmission company Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd to utilise the latter's optic fibre network between Jabalpur and Dhule.

Power Grid, which has obtained an Infrastructure Provider II licence, will also provide its network to Bharti in Delhi-Chandigarh and Delhi-Jaipur sectors. The agreement in this regard will be signed between the two in the coming weeks.

Bharti group chairman and managing director Sunil Bharti Mittal, said:" Power Grid and Bharti Telesonics have signed first capacity agreement to utilise Power Grid's telecom network in Jabalpur -Dhule, part of Power Grid's Delhi-Mumbai route, to provide services as a part of Bharti's national long distance operations."

Both, Power Grid and Bharti are in the process of setting up their broadband telecom networks.

While Bharti is laying 25,000 kms of optic fibre network, Power Grid is planning a 14,000-km network in two to three years covering 56 cities, at an investment of Rs 10 billion.

"Bharti and Power Grid shall work in close co-ordination to utilise each other's network to provide services", said a press statement from Power Grid. Power Grid's Delhi -Bombay link is being taken on a priority basis and is scheduled to be completed by March 2002. This is to be followed by Hyderabad- Bangalore- Madras link in June 2002, Delhi - Hyderabad link in July 2002 and Delhi- Calcutta by December 2002.
