Essar gets LoIs for 21 circles

The government has cleared the application of Essar Group promoted telecom services company Aircel Digilink for providing basic services in all the 21 telecom circles in the country.

With this the total number of applications cleared by the government has reached 69 after it had issued LOIs to Reliance, HFCL, Bharti and Tata.

Aircel Digilink currently provides cellular services in Uttar Pradesh (East), Haryana and Rajasthan.

Sources in DoT said: "We have issued 21 LoIs to Aircel Digilink late last week."

Earlier Reliance group had been issued LoIs for 18 telecom circles including Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and Haryana. Tatas have netted 15 LoIs for Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Punjab circles among others.

DoT had also issued LoIs to HFCL for 7 circles including Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (west), Maharashtra and Karnataka while Bharti had received licences for 8 circles including Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

The government had received more than 160 applications for providing basic operations. Of this a whopping 52 applications were submitted on the very first day after the basic operators policy guidelines were announced.
