Silver scam accused commits suicide

BS Regional Bureau

Dewang Shah, the prime accused in the silver scam, committed suicide in Ahmedabad on Thursday by slashing his wrists.

Shah, the branch manager of Bombay-based BVC Travels, was admitted to a hospital after an earlier suicide attempt following revelations that a stock of silver bullion worth Rs 390 million and gold biscuits worth Rs 46 billion, supplied by the United Bank of Switzerland was missing from the BVC Travel's private vault.

The local police had registered a case of cheating and breach of trust against Shah under Sections 408 and 420.

During interrogation by the police over the last two days, Shah had said the 39 tonne of silver have been delivered to the bullion firm KL Chokshi, and the 1,000 gold biscuits to its sister concern, Guru Exports.
