Indian state-owned telecoms giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd will open financial bids for the supply of optical fibre cable on May 24, a letter from the company said.

BSNL received bids from 13 Indian companies to supply 60,000 km (37,500 miles) of 12-fibre optical cable and 12,000 km (7,500 miles) of 24-fibre optical cable in response to a tender floated in January.

Industry officials estimated the order to be worth about Rs 8.5 billion ($180 million).

The firms that bid for the order include Sterlite Opitcal Technologies Ltd, Aksh Optifibre Ltd, Birla Ericsson Optical Ltd and Himachal Futuristic Communications Ltd.

BSNL paid out Rs 103,500 for one km of 12-fibre optical cable and Rs 183,600 for one km of 24-fibre cable for a smaller optical fibre cable order it opened in January.
