4 top Hind Insecticides officials in CBI net for 'favouring' US firmsThe Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a corruption case against four top officials of Hindustan Insecticides Ltd and two US-based firms for allegedly causing a loss of Rs 18.8 million to the government by showing undue favour to US companies in the import of insecticides during 1993-97. In its FIR registered last month, the agency has named the then HIL chairman-cum-managing director D Jayaprakash, the then director (finance) Rajender Mohan, the then director (marketing) C C Abraham and Amit Bhatnagar, for favouring two US firms -- Becker Microbial Products Inc. of Florida and Lobel Corporation of New York, besides some others. All these officials were posted at HIL's Scope Complex Office here at Lodhi Road. Jayaprakash, who has since retired, is presently residing in Cochin, the FIR said. HIL, a Government of India enterprise, had been making pesticides for insect control and supplying all its health purpose products to/through the National Malaria Eradication Programme. Even the sale of these products to the states was possible only through NMEP, the FIR said. But the accused HIL officials, in their capacity as public servants, entered into a criminal conspiracy among themselves as also with the two US firms and some other persons here with the object of showing undue favour to the American firms in violation of norms, CBI alleged.
