Wipro begins operations in Germany

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Wipro Technologies, the global IT services business of the Bangalore-based Wipro Ltd, on Wednesday launched its German operations, operating out of Frankfurt.

Wipro will cater to the IT requirements of the German market, especially its enterprises looking for business applications. The company will also meet the R&D outsourcing requirements of German technology firms.

In order to bridge the cultural gap and improve the productivity of its software engineers, Wipro is gearing up to provide German language training to its consultants working on projects in Germany.

Wipro has already been delivering IT and product design services to some leading German telecom, banking and technology companies. There are about 100 Wipro consultants working for German clients, both in Germany as well as in its software development centers in India.

Commencing the operations in Frankfurt, Wipro Corporation chairman Azim Premji said the entry into the German market represented a big step forward to be a truly global company.

"We look forward to working with leading German corporations and helping them to derive the benefits of IT," India's richest billionaire Premji said.

Company's European operations' vice-president Sudip Nandy stated that Wipro would address the requirements of the enterprise, technology and service provider markets.

According to a Gartner study, Germany is the second largest IT market in Europe, and is expected to grow to $92 billion by 2003. The major segments of this growth will be development and integration, infrastructure management services, consulting, and software support services.

Europe contributed 29 per cent to Wipro's total software services revenue of $380 million for the fiscal year 2000-01.

In the UK, where it works with leading companies like Transco, Thomas Cook, NTL, Thames Water and Nortel, Wipro has a development center at Reading. It also has a strong presence in Scandinavia where it works with some of the leading telecom companies.

Wipro helps telecom and Internet service providers migrate to the next generation networks and products with its telecom solutions and system integration capabilities.
