Volkswagen may source auto parts from India

BS Corporate Bureau

German automobile major, Volkswagen, has evinced interest in sourcing some automobile equipment from auto ancillary units in India.

According to a statement issued by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, "this was indicated to a business delegation from the IGCC when it visited Volkswagen's manufacturing facilities at Hannover recently."

The delegation was led by Ajay Singha, regional director, IGCC, and comprised 25 representatives from medium-sized companies in the light engineering and machine tools sector spread across India's northern region, the statement said.

The week-long visit of the IGCC team coincided with the Hannover and Nuernberg trade fairs where the delegation discussed possibilities of joint collaborations with firms from Germany, Switzerland and other European countries.

The areas chosen for technical collaboration include rice milling plants, injection moulding machinery, laundry plants using CNG technology and some specialised machinery, the IGCC release said.

The Indian delegation also held interactive sessions with representatives of the German Asia Pacific Business Association (Ostasien Verein), Hamburg; Hannover Chamber of Commerce and European Association of Machine Tool Merchants.

Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha had addressed members of Ostasien Verein last month. Ostasien Verein is one of the most powerful lobbies in Europe and supports the business activities of its member companies in the Asian region.
