Reforms transforming India to country of surpluses: Jaitley

The ongoing economic reforms are transforming India from a country of shortages to a country of surpluses with consequent benefits to consumer of lower prices and more choices, Indian Law Minister Arun Jaitley said in New York.

Giving projection for the next ten years, he said the focus of reforms would be on building of infrastructure with major emphasis on construction of highways and connecting roads right up to the village level, generation and distribution of power and development of transportation sector.

Addressing the American-Indian Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Jaitley said that the continuation of reforms required a change in the mind-set of politicians. They should support reforms whether they are in or out of power.

He decried the tendency to support reforms when in power and oppose them while in opposition.

Jaitley appreciated the economic reforms initiated by ex-finance minister Manmohan Singh and said Singh should be congratulated for that.

He said the reforms are not for the benefit of the rich and the industrialists only but would help common man enjoy better quality of life.

The ten years of reforms have already lifted millions above the poverty line and the process would accelerate in the years to come, he said.
