433 shareholders own 80 per cent of Infosys

Nearly 87 per cent of Infosys Technologies shareholders, or 77,725 people, hold between 1 and 100 shares in the company, or 1.53 per cent of the total shareholding of the company.

On the other hand, 433 shareholders or 0.48 per cent of the total shareholding, own around 80 per cent of Infosys shares.

The stake beneficially owned by Infosys chairman N R Narayana Murthy in the company is a mere 7.42 per cent. The total percentage of stake held by all the founding members of Infosys, including Murthy, is 29.16 per cent.

Interestingly, Wipro chairman Azim Premji alone is learnt to own over 85 per cent of shares of his group.

During 2000, around 74.63 per cent of the total number of Infosys shareholders held equity shares between 1 and 100. The next largest group of shareholders, who constitute 8.74 per cent of the total shareholders, own between 1,001 and 5000 shares.

Among the founding members of the company, Infosys managing director Nandan M Nilekani beneficially holds 5.04 per cent, Dinesh K holds 3.52 per cent, K Gopalkrishnan holds 4.81 per cent, Shibulal S D holds 3.2 per cent, and N S Raghavan, who retired last year, holds 5.17 per cent.

Shares beneficially owned by the directors include the equity shares owned by their family members to which such directors disclaim beneficial ownership.

Beneficial ownership is determined in accordance with rules of the Securities and Exchange Commission, US, and includes voting and investment power with respect to such shares.

The Unit Trust of India owns 8.38 per cent of total number of shares of Infosys, while the Government of Singapore holds 5.48 per cent of shares.

The number of shares and percentage ownership is based on 66,158,117 equity shares outstanding as of March 31, 2001.

As of March 31, 2001, a total of 28.89 per cent of the company's equity shares are held by foreign institutional investors, overseas corporate bodies and non-resident Indians.

The Nasdaq-listed Infosys posted a 94.5 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 1.82 billion for the fourth-quarter of 2000-01 even as its net profit for the entire fiscal surged by 114 per cent to Rs 6.29 billion compared with the previous year.
