Public sector strike on May 18 called off

Central trade unions on Wednesday called off the proposed nationwide strike on May 18 after the Balco workers reached an agreement with Sterlite management, but said their opposition to 'retrograde policy of privatisation' will continue.

"In view of the end of 65 days' strike at Balco on May nine, the public sector strike scheduled for May 18 in support of Balco workers' struggle has been called off," a joint statement said.

"However, the trade unions will continue to oppose the retrograde policy of privatisation," the statement added.

Signatories to the statement include All-India Trade Union Congress, Bhartiya Mazddor Sangh, CITU and Hind Mazdoor Sabha.

The nationwide strike call for May 18 had been given by Central trade unions in solidarity with the striking workers of Bharat Aluminium Company.
