Solicitor General to represent Centre on panel to renegotiate DPC deal

The central government has appointed the Solicitor General of India as its nominee on the panel set up by the Maharashtra government to renegotiate terms with the

Enron-sponsored Dabhol Power Company on the $2.9-billion power project, Union Power Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Wednesday.

The panel, headed by Madhav Godbole, was set up after consultations with the Centre on April 30 and given a clear mandate to bring the tariff down.

Meanwhile, the DPC is scheduled to meet the panel on May 11 'to know its mind'.

Responding to questions by reporters here, Prabhu said that the Centre could not intervene in the matter and it was for Enron to take a decision on the project.

When pointed out that the Maharashtra government is 'unable' to pay power bills to DPC, he said:"It is for the state government to take a decision on what they want to do on this."

The central government was helping the state government to resolve the Enron imbroglio, the minister said.

"Let the government of Maharashtra take a decision and intimate us. Then, we will react."

Prabhu, who earlier participated in the inauguration function of the CII's Institute of Quality on Bangalore's outskirts, said fast track power projects in the country were in 'various stages'.
