Trade unions to strike on May 18

Four trade unions have asked workers of all public sector undertakings to participate in a nationwide strike on May 18 in support of the striking workers of Bharat Aluminium Company.

Four central unions - All India Trade Union Congress, Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh, Centre for Indian Trade Unions and Hind Mazdoor Sabha -- held a meeting here to discuss the ongoing strike in Balco, which has been continuing since March 3.

"The trade unions expressed dismay over the non-response of the government despite the joint letter to the prime minister by all the central trade unions on April 23, urging for convening a joint meeting with the trade unions to find a respectable solution of the Balco issue," a joint statement by unions said.

Meanwhile, the seven employees unions of Balco decided to continue their stir and rejected the Supreme Court proposal that they may resume duty by May 8 accepting two months salary.
