Balaji to meet May 9 to review Nine merger

Indian television content provider Balaji Telefilms' board will meet on May 9 to review the merger of Nine Network Entertainment India, a unit of Australia's Channel Nine, the Bombay Stock Exchange said on Monday.

Balaji had indicated last week that the merger mooted in November last year, would be reviewed because of problems that Channel Nine has with state-run television broadcaster Doordarshan.

Media reports have said there is a deadlock between Doordarshan and Channel Nine over the extension of a contract for primetime programming on Doordarshan's Metro channel.

Balaji was due to supply television programming to Channel Nine for the Metro channel, they said.

Balaji's shares have been rising since news that the merger may be called off because the merger would have entailed earnings dilution.

They have gained 16.57 per cent from Thursday's close to Rs 134 in Monday afternoon deals at the BSE.
