Sinha says tax shortfall to hit fiscal deficit

Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said on Saturday a shortfall in tax collections had impacted the fiscal deficit in the 2000-2001 (April-March) financial year.

"There will be some impact on fiscal deficit as a result of tax shortfall but what the impact would be, we will have to wait for the final figures," he told reporters on the margins of a conference.

Sinha had said in February the government would be able to maintain the fiscal deficit for 2000-2001 at the targeted level of 5.1 per cent of gross domestic product.

Finance ministry officials said the tax revenue figures for 2000-2001 would be ready by Monday.

The fiscal deficit 2001-2002 has been set at 4.7 percent of the GDP.
