Fiat India plans launch of CNG versionsV Phani Kumar Fiat India is planning to launch the CNG versions of all passenger cars in its existing range -- the Uno, the Siena and the Siena Weekend. The company is deliberating on the price and modifications required for these models in the run-up to their launch. A company spokesperson, while confirming the development, declined to set a time frame for the launch of the variants. This is the first time it will be introducing factory-fitted CNG kits on the cars. Among the company's other cars, a few numbers of the diesel version of the Uno is already being used as a taxi in certain parts of the country. It is understood that some taxi drivers are operating Unos fitted with CNG kits, through their own initiative, in order to reduce their running costs. The introduction of the three new variants will strengthen the variations being offered by the company on its three cars to 24. During 2000-01, the company's sales were just 9,370 units, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The sales represent a 54 per cent decline over the company's sales of 20,746 units in 1999-2000. However, the company is pinning its hopes on its world car, the Palio, to reverse the steep decline in sales. Of an installed production capacity of 60,000 units per annum at its Kurla plant here, the company is planning to dedicate 50,000 units for manufacturing the Palio alone. Senior company officials have refused to announce a time-frame for the launch of the Palio, only saying that the car will be launched before Christmas this year. However, it is understood that the Palio is already undergoing test runs in the country. Recently, the company had called a meeting of its dealers at the Regent hotel here, where the Palio was displayed to them. YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO READ:
