Videocon mulls new units in Mohali, AP

Shruti Sharma

Videocon International Limited is planning to set up manufacturing plants in Mohali and Andhra Pradesh.

With both the plants having a capacity ranging between 0.3 million tonne and 0.5 million tonne, the company plans to manufacture televisions, washing machines and refrigerators.

Though investment details were not divulged, it is however clear that both the plants will be functional by next year.

Further, besides having a plant at Hosur near Bangalore, Salt Lake near Calcutta and one in Aurangabad, the company has very recently set up another plant at Attibele near Bangalore in collaboration with Samsung technology and engineers.

"From time immemorial, we have been following our philosophy of making international technology accessible to the Indian consumers and so this is just another attempt," said Venugopal Dhoot, chairman, Videocon International Ltd.

With an investment of Rs 4 billion in the project, the Attibele plant is spread over 42 acres. It has been set up with the sole purpose of manufacturing compressors, frost-free refrigerators, dishwashers, microwave ovens, motors for washing machines, and food processors.

In addition, for the frost-free refrigerators, the plant and machinery has been purchased from Samsung based in South Korea, while the compressors come from a company called Necchi SPA of Italy.
