StanChart to add staff in India, Malaysia

Asian specialist bank Standard Chartered said it would add about 1,000 staff in India and Malaysia, despite a headcount reduction programme announced last August.

"Around 1,000 new staff will be added at the global hubs in India and Malaysia," the London-listed bank said in its 2000 annual report, a copy of which was received by Reuters in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

It did not give a time frame.

Standard Chartered has identified Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Madras in India as 'global hubs' for its support and processing functions, various media have reported.

Last August, the bank said it would reduce staff levels by 6,200, or about 20 per cent of its workforce, by the end of 2003.

"A reduction of 2,000 has already been achieved," the annual report said.
