Maruti April car sales down 12.5 per cent

India's largest car maker Maruti Udyog Ltd said on Wednesday its car sales in April slid 12.5 per cent to 26,264 units from 30,022 last year.

A company statement said April car sales included 11,687 of its small Maruti 800 model and 4,921 Omni vans.

India's automobile sales have been hit in the last year by a slowing economy and higher car prices caused by increased state taxes.

In the premium small car segment, it sold 4,372 units of the Zen model, 1,453 of the Wagon R and 2,779 of its recently launched Alto. It sold 953 Esteems and 99 Balenos in the mid-size car segment.

Maruti, in which the Indian government and Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp each hold 50 per cent equity, had an Indian market share of 58.3 per cent in 2000-01 (April-March).

New car sales fell 7.8 per cent to 567,734 units in the financial year ended in March while Maruti's domestic car sales shrank 12.5 per cent 329,542 units.
