Mukesh Ambani in race for World Entrepreneur title

BS Corporate Bureau

Reliance Industries and Reliance Petroleum vice-chairman Mukesh Ambani is in the running for a different kind of Mr World title-Ernst & Young's just introduced "World Entrepreneur of the Year 2001" award.

Mukesh AmbaniAmbani will be competing with 21 other international business heads from 18 global businesses in Monte Carlo, Monaco, in May, Ernst & Young chairman K N Memani announced at a press conference here on Monday.

Ambani's rivals include Scott Kriens, chairman and CEO of Juniper Networks, Peter Kabel, CEO of the Germany-based Kabel New Media, David Darling, chief executive of the UK-based Codemasters, Xander van Meerwijk, president of the Dutch Merison group and Clive Beddoe, president and executive chairman of the Canadian airline WestJet Airlines (the airline has four candidates, because the Canadian panel of judges was not able to select one of the airline's entrepreneurs over the other three).

The winner will be judged on the basis of financial data of their companies (Reliance Petroleum, in Ambani's case) furnished, their company's track record, environmental friendliness, the degree of difficulty under which the company performed and the leadership he provided.

In all cases, Ernst & Young sought data from the companies in an elaborate, seven month process.
