Fire causes heavy losses at Vizag Steel Plant unit

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The public sector Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited has ordered an enquiry into a fire in the medium merchant structural mill of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Friday.

The fire raged for four hours in the MMSM causing estimated losses of millions of rupees. Fortunately, there were no casualties as the workers were away at the time of the mishap.

An official VSP release, however, said that a 'minor fire' broke out at the MMSM and it was soon brought under control. The release claimed that there was no loss of property. An investigation would reveal the cause of accident, it added.

The accident was caused when sparks fell on lubricants while lancing (gas-cutting of heavy scrap) was being done by a contract worker at the retraceable stopper of the mill in the MMSM located on three floors.

The fire broke out in the first floor and spread to two other floors below. High-power underground cables were burnt, causing heavy losses.

Fire tenders, which were immediately pressed into service, put out the fire which raged for four hours.
